Can I Temporarily Disable Snapchat?

Snapchat has been around for quite a while now, but it remains a popular social media platform, especially among teens and young adults. The photo sharing and filters let users creatively express their personalities and connect with others worldwide. The downside, however, is that Snapchat can be a distraction to work or studies. Here, we’ll show you how to temporarily disable your Snapchat account.

Deletion vs. Deactivation

Snapchat’s account deactivation process is the same as the deletion process. You go through the same steps to initiate it. Once all the actions are taken, Snapchat will tag your account for deletion. You will have 30 days to change your mind before the platform moves to clean off your account from its servers. This means temporary deactivation only gives you 30 days to reactivate your Snapchat.

Take note, however, that it may take a day for your reactivation to be processed. To be on the safe side, we recommend that you give it 29 days at most to reactivate your account.

To do so, all you have to do is open Snapchat and log in to your account.

The Deactivation Process of Snapchat Account

To deactivate your Snapchat account (or delete it), follow these steps below:

  1. Visit the Snapchat website.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Click the “Download My Data” option to back up relevant personal data.
  4. Go to the deactivation link to initiate the account deactivation process.
  5. Enter your login details.
  6. Go through the 2-step verification if prompted.

You have now deactivated your account. It will remain available for reactivation for 30 days before Snapchat proceeds to delete it.

Deactivation in the Snapchat App

Snapchat typically did not allow users to deactivate or delete accounts in the app. To do these, you would have to visit the website itself. However, an exception is made for iPhone users. Last June 30, 2022, Apple implemented an app account deletion policy that allowed users to deactivate and delete accounts from the application. The process is simple and straightforward:

  1. Launch the Snapchat app.
  2. Log in to your account.
  3. Go to the Profile screen.
  4. On the upper left corner, tap the Bitmoji avatar.
  5. Tap the Settings icon that resembles a gear.
  6. Tap Account Actions.
  7. Select Delete Account.
  8. You will be redirected to a page for your deletion/deactivation process. Input your login details.
  9. Follow the prompts and complete your account deactivation.

Just like the browser option, you also have 30 days to log in to your account and reactivate it.
